For the Younger Parent - FREE
Adult Driving Programs
Learn to cope with the demands of driving today. This classroom refresher course focuses
on safe driving skills and various defensive driving techniques. Upon course completion,
most auto insurance carriers honor a discounted premium for a three-year period.
Stroke is a form of cardiovascular disease. It affects the arteries or veins and
stops the flow of blood bringing oxygen and nutrients to the brain. A stroke occurs
when one of these blood vessels bursts or becomes clogged. Learn how to prevent
strokes and how to identify signs and symptoms of a stroke. Early recognition and
modern stroke care can prevent long-term disability.
June 3 - Long-Term Care Insurance by Ron Birnbaum, Benefits Consultant
A serious illness or injury can jeopardize your good health and exhaust your resourses.
Learn about Medicare coverage and its limitations. You will receive a free 20-page
booklet to help you evaluate your need for additional long-term care assistance.
August 5 - CPR and First Aid for Choking program
Do you know what to do if someone stops breathing or starts choking? This special
lecture/workshop lets you learn about treatment for these and other emergency
situations. Anyone who chooses to practice the techniques on CPR manikins can
do so and receive a free CPR card from the American Heart Association.

SCHEDULE OF SERVICES MAY 1998 THROUGH AUGUST 1998
CLASSES ARE CONDUCTED AT THE NORTH PENN HOSPITAL
IN THE DIABETES TREATMENT CENTER CLASSROOM - FOURTH FLOOR.
12-hour Comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management Classes
Offered weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays. Participants must
attend the entire 12-hour session.

6:30 P.M. TO 9:30 P.M. - HELD ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY EVENINGS FOR TWO
CONSECUTIVE WEEKS.
SATURDAY 12-HOUR COMPREHENSIVE DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT CLASSES
9:00 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M. HELD ONCE PER MONTH ON TWO CONSECUTIVE SATURDAYS
Participation in all services requires a physician's referral.

Unrecognized and untreated high blood pressure can lead to stroke,
heart attack or kidney failure. Many times high blood pressure is
undetected until a health crisis occurs. Once detected, high blood
pressure can be controlled with diet, exercise and/or medication,
reducing the risk for heart disease. Keep a check on your blood
pressure and reduce the risk factors for heart disease.

Total Cholesterol (TC) or TC/High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Ratio
Now you have a choice! We have state-of-the-art equipment that provides
a TC/HDL ratio in 5 minutes from a non-fasting finger stick. The
standard total cholesterol screening will also be available. High
cholesterol is one of the major modifiable risk factors of heart attack
and stroke. Information about reducing dietary fats will be available.
(Clinical laboratory permit from Pennsylvania Department of Health).

Strokes, known as brain attacks, are like heart attacks but affect different part of the
body. On average, someone suffers a stroke in the United States every minute. This
program was developed by the American Heart Association to identify people who are
at risk of stroke and provide information about warning signs and prevention. The
assessment program includes a personal/family medical history; and blood pressure,
pulse, and carotid bruits check.

All women are welcome to attend this program to learn breast self-examination (BSE)
and to receive a free breast examination by Margaret Simcox, MD. A voucher for a
$40 mammogram will be available to women who are 40 years of age and did not have
a previous mammogram.

Skin cancer is the most common and most curable type of cancer. Skin cancer affects over
600,000 persons each year. Recognizing new growths or changes in your skin's appearance
is the key to early detection and successful treatment. Screening examinations will be
provided by dermatologist Donald Adler, DO; James Fairfield, MD, Abby VanVoorhees, MD
and Michael Stierstorfer, MD. Prevention and treatment information will also be available.

and 500 healthcare workers, cancer survivors, and their families for the 1998
Cancer Survivor's Day celebration. David A. Rodgers PhD, a licensed psychologist
will speak about how personality styles affect survivorship. Live music, door prizes,
and refreshments will compliment the day. National Cancer Survivors Day recognizes
the more than eight million cancer survivors living in the United States, as well as
highlights the positive advances that have been made in methods of early detection,
cancer treatment, and research. Reservations are required.

This weight management program, developed and presented by nutrition specialists at
Penn State University, is based on the most current research on theories of obesity,
weight loss and relapse prevention. The 12-week program emphasizes permanent lifestyle
changes. You should expect to lose from one half to two pounds per week by following

Mall Walk - Free
Walking is one of the safest ways for people of all ages to condition your body
aerobically, lose weight, reduce stress and boost your energy level. North Penn
Hospital promotes a walking program at Montgomery Mall where you can walk at your own
pace and enjoy the comforts of air conditioning and smooth walking surface in a safe,
well lighted environment. Starting at the location of your choice. Pamphlets are

Food for Thought
Are you able to balance your daily responsibilities and maintain
sound nutrition? Need help? Come to this four-week workshop and learn
about healthful eating habits, boosting your metabolism, understanding your
emotional connection to food and ways to modify recipes for healthy
eating. The workshop is created and presented by registered dietitians, a licensed
psychologist and a personal trainer.

Risk Profile Management (RPM) Program
Heart disease is the number one cause of death of men and women in America. The RPM
Program may help reduce your risk for heart disease. Receive an individualized
exercise prescription, counseling and participate confidently in 20 exercise sessions
over a 10-week period. When the program is completed, a maintenance program at the NPH
Cardiac Fitness Center can be set up or a home-exercise prescription can be provided.

Long Term Care Seminar/Workshop, Lifetime Healthcare Strategies Presentation - FREE
Come to an educational workshop and learn about your options for funding long-term care
and the new changes in Medicare. A serious illness or injury can jeoparize your good
health but it doesn't have to mean financial jeapordy too. You'll receive a FREE 20 page
booklet, "A Family Affair" that will help you evaluate your need for long-term care

A private fitting for a weighted breast form designed for temporary use is available
for women who have undergone a mastectomy but are not ready for a commercial breast
prosthesis. This service is a component of the American Cancer Society's Reach to
Recovery Program.

Community Level CPR Classes
Save a life, learn current CPR standards. Adult CPR classes include means to identify
and modify risk factors for heart attack, stroke and choking. Pediatric CPR classes
address accident prevention as a means to reduce the need for emergency care.
CPR and Heimlich techniques, will be presented in all classes.

Be prepared for an emergency through this National Safety Council Basic First Aid course.

Parenting and Children
Babysitting Course
This course will prepare sitters age 11 and older for the challenge of babysitting.
Instructors review techniques for childcare from birth to age six. The program addresses
personal and child safety, accident prevention, and first aid for emergency situations.

most of the childbirth and parenthood experience. Among the courses offered are: Prepared

North Penn Hospital's Seniors Dining Club offers members the opportunity to enjoy a
nutritious, balanced dinner at a discounted rate. The Club is sponsored by North
Penn Hospital and there is no charge to join. Daily menu selections include homemade soup;
crisp fresh salad bar; choice of hot entrees; vegetables and side dishes; assorted desserts,
including frozen yogurt; and hot and cold beverages. Dinner is served daily, seven days a
week, including holidays, from 5:30 - 7 PM in the cafeteria, which is located on the
hospital's lower level. Free parking is available in the visitor parking lot.
