The Philadelphia Mummers

January 1st, 2016

South Philly — “The Philadelphia Mummers Parade features unique costumes, music, and pageantry. Crowds line Broad Street, from South Philadelphia straight through Center City. The climax of the parade takes place at City Hall and the PA Convention Center where the official judging takes place.”

The mummers started many years ago when residents of South Philly would dress up like women and parade through the neighborhoods. Now, a large parade takes place in center city every New Year’s Day.

Philly Air Quality Warning

December 8th, 2015

PHILADELPHIA — It is rare to have an air quality alert in the winter; however, Philly has experienced four hazardous air days in a row. Normally air quality alert days are caused by ozone. These air quality alert days are caused by “particle concentrations”.

View the current air quality for Philadelphia.

Forecast Discussion: Tuesday is an Air Quality Action day for the Philadelphia metropolitan area for Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) or Code Orange particles. An unprecedented air quality event unfolded across the Delaware Valley beginning Saturday night and has continued into Monday. A very strong area of high pressure has created strong surface inversions that have trapped pollutants, allowing particle concentrations to reach the USG range on Sunday and continue into Monday. Typically these types of strong inversions do not develop until later in the winter, when there is snow on the ground. For Tuesday, another strong morning inversion is expected, and very light winds will become calm in the afternoon, which will continue to limit atmospheric mixing. This stagnation will allow USG particle concentrations to extend into Tuesday. **Extended Forecast: By Wednesday afternoon, surface winds will pick up, which should return particles to the upper Moderate range. But on Thursday, a warming trend combined with another episode of stagnating winds may push particles back into the USG range.

Potty Talk

November 20th, 2015

Philadelphia, November 19, 2015 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter signed legislation requiring that privately-owned establishments that service the public, like restaurants, replace gender specific signage designating male or female on single-occupancy bathrooms with gender-neutral signage into law. The legislation, introduced by Councilman Mark Squilla on behalf of the Nutter Administration, expands inclusivity requirements on city-owned facilities with single-stall restrooms to privately-owned establishments and helps ensure that all Philadelphians have access to safe bathrooms.

“Philadelphia is a world-class, welcoming city that proudly celebrates the diversity of our residents and communities. Our inclusive practices and commitment to equality makes our city truly great and a leader on LGBT issues,” said Mayor Nutter. “This legislation expands and strengthens gender-identity protections and is an important step in support of our LGBT community, especially our transgender community members. I am proud that Philadelphia is one of the largest cities in the nation to implement this kind of policy and I want to thank Councilman Squilla for introducing this bill on our Administration’s behalf.”

All signage on applicable bathroom facilities must be changed by January 20, 2016, the legislation’s effective date. The Department of Licenses and Inspections will oversee enforcement of the law.

Philadelphia Becomes First World Heritage City in US

November 7th, 2015

PHILADELPHIA — The Organization of World Heritage Cities voted to add Philadelphia as the United States’ first World Heritage City. Philadelphia qualified because Independence Hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. “The Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution of the United States (1787) were both signed in this building in Philadelphia. The universal principles of freedom and democracy set forth in these documents are of fundamental importance to American history and have also had a profound impact on law-makers around the world.”
