Riverside Concert Series

Glen Foerd on the Delaware’s popular concert series starts Thursday, June 26th, at 7 pm. The first concert will feature the funk and jazz sounds of the local trio, Get Happy.

Get Happy includes organist Scott Coulter, guitarist Mark Forchic and drummer Kris Rudzinski. Together they have played at festivals including The Swedesboro Jazz Festival and Victory Lakes’ Jam on the Lake. Their music includes the songs of Miles Davis, and other jazz standards, as well as pop and rock favorites including The Beatles and the funky sounds of the Meters.

Glen Foerd’s July 17th concert will feature the big band-era music of the Monday Blues Swing Orchestra. On August 21st concert goers will be treated to the 1920s speakeasy sounds of Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society.

Concerts will be held in the estate’s outdoor event structure overlooking the Delaware River and will feature one hour uninterrupted sets beginning at 7:00 pm and ending at 8:00 pm. Admission is pay what you wish, with no set admission price. Proceeds from the concerts will benefit the Glen Foerd estate and the concert artists. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs, pack a picnic dinner and enjoy the show. This year’s concert goers can also purchase tasty treats from Buttercream Cupcake and Bakery’s Cupcake Truck.

Glen Foerd on the Delaware is the last of the grand Philadelphia riverfront estates open to the public. Its mission is to connect visitors to the legacy of Glen Foerd through programs in the arts, nature and history and to preserve and protect the landscape, buildings and collections for the enjoyment and enrichment of the community and future generations. Glen Foerd is a Fairmount Park property operated by the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation in cooperation with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and supported in part by the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.

The Hooters will take the stage at 9pm with an opening act from SideArm at 7pm.

Nine Lives Of Katz Over

Just a week after winning a fierce court battle for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Lewis Katz died in a plane crash. Known for being a Jewish philanthropist, Katz made for stories in the local news over the ownership of the area’s largest newspaper. Headlines in the paper he would eventually takeover read, “Katz accuses Norcross of ‘innuendos and lies’ in Inquirer battle.”

We will march through the streets of Philadelphia at the markets close (MARCH AT 3PM) !! I just got off the phone with Bob Pierson founder and director of Farm to City and he is delighted to have us. He informed me that the market is 100% non-gmo with a concentration on organic and local foods. March Against Monsanto Philly and GMO Free PA will have free information and GMO-Free swag available to the public fro 9am to 3pm. Food not bombs will be feeding the masses for free from 12 noon until we march. The march will start at 3pm and the march route will weave through center city as we distribute thousands of flyers to the sheeple. The march will end in Love Park with a moment of love and solidarity for all the awareness we have inspired!”

The Roxborough, Wissahickon and Manayunk Historical Society of Philadelphia has been documenting the history of the Shawmont Station.

1826 — After returning from England, Architect, William Strickland writes his “Reports on Canals, Railways, Roads, and Other Subjects”, made to the Pennsylvania Society for the Promotion of Internal Improvement. The Schuylkill Navigation Company completes laying their Schuylkill Turnpike between Domino Lane in Roxborough and Montgomery County, previously known as The Pebble Road. Nathan Nathans builds his vacation home on a small section of land between the Schuylkill Turnpike and Towpath, close to the Schuylkill River.

The American Lung Association has released it’s annual report on air quality. Philadelphia ranked among the worst cities.

Ozone received a failing grade of “F”. “Tropospheric ozone is formed by the interaction of sunlight, particularly ultraviolet light, with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, which are emitted by automobiles, gasoline vapors, fossil fuel power plants, refineries, and certain other industries.” — National Center for Atmospheric Research

Craft Fair

Fair hours are 11 am to 7 pm Friday & Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday. Admission is free. Street and garage parking is plentiful.

The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen returns to Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square with its third annual juried fine craft fair over Mother’s Day weekend, May 9, 10 & 11. The event was named a Top 100 Fine Craft Fair in the nation by ArtFair Sourcebook, a respected publication in the craft industry known for its artist-submitted show reviews.

Through a partnership with Friends of Rittenhouse Square and in conjunction with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, this event brings 145 fine craftsmen from across the country and Canada to downtown Philadelphia.
