What: Keep Philadelphia Beautiful and sponsor GIANT Food Stores will dedicate a bench at the Office for Community Development of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s recently announced PA Horticultural Society award winning community garden. This event will precede a statewide launch of the plastic bag waste awareness campaign, A Bag’s Life. The campaign messages that people should reduce, reuse and recycle plastic bags, instead of littering or throwing the bags in the trash. The bench is an example of an end product use for recycled plastic bags.

Philadelphia’s LARGEST Earth Day Celebration:

The 30th Annual 5K Run for Clean Air and Earth Day Celebration will take place April 16th, 2011. The course starts at the Philadelphia Art Museum and runs along Martin Luther King Drive. Arriving back at the finish line, the Clean Air Council has invited its partners and sponsors to participate in the Earth Day Celebration, providing an opportunity for community participants to hear about the latest Green event news, resources, and trends.

The 5K Run for Clean Air is a community effort to decrease the air pollution that triggers asthma and other respiratory problems in our families, as well as support programs that reduce waste in favor of increased recycling and composting and slow down global warming.

#5 plastics recycling & more this Saturday at Weaver’s Way Co-Op in Mt. Airy!

The next collection of #5 plastics will be this coming Saturday, June 19th, from 10am to 1pm at the garage of the Weavers Way Co-op, at 542 Carpenter Lane (across the street and a bit further down the block from the Big Blue Marble bookstore).

Please note that we will also be taking used household batteries and egg cartons!

Also, as you know, we ask recyclers for a small donation to cover postage costs of mailing the recyclables to the Gimme 5 processing facility in New York state. Any donations not needed to cover our costs will go into the Weavers Way environment committee’s recycling fund, from which grants are given to various environmental community projects every spring. Since we no longer have a major funding source for the grants, you are encouraged to be generous in what you donate at the collections!.

There are a several work shifts open for this Saturday’s collection. You can sign up the help us on the Weavers Way work calendar or by replying to this email. Experienced helpers are especially needed!

If you haven’t already signed up for Philadelphia’s Recycling Rewards program, which starts in NW Philly next month, Carolyn Scott can sign you up at Saturday’s collection.

Gimme 5 Collection Guidelines

The #5 plastics category includes most yogurt cups, sour cream containers, hummus tubs, some medicine bottles, and more. Your recyclables must be clean and dry to be accepted. Impurities of any kind compromise the recycling process and can lead the recycling facility to discard an entire batch. Exclude any lids unless they are clearly marked #5.

We ask recyclers for a small donation to cover postage costs of mailing the recyclables to the Gimme 5 processing facility in New York state.

Before bringing your #5s to the collection, be sure that they meet the requirements for Gimme 5:

* All items must be CLEAN and DRY. If they contained food or any oily or dirty product, make sure they have been washed, not just rinsed. Items stacked when wet tend to stay wet, so allow washed items to dry fully before stacking or packing.
* The #5 stamp needs to be visible on each item. Lids are separate items. Don’t assume lids are the same number plastic as the container; sometimes they are but usually they are not. Check to make sure there are no other materials (labels, paper, other number plastics, metal) on the items you bring in.

Brita filters are also welcome! Let them air dry for several days to make sure they are completely dry.

The Green Up Clean Up Palooza Extravaganza Fundraiser Party hits West Chester, PA on Saturday, May 22 from 3 PM to midnight. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the launch of KD Clean and to educate the community about sustainable greenn choices that families can make easily in their homes.

Food (including vegetarian options) and beverages will be available throughout the afternoon and early evening. Activities include swimming, volleyball, yoga, a drum circle, and musical performances. Families with children are welcome. Activities for children run from 3:30 PM to 7 PM and include a music corner, scavenger hunt, craft table, and kids yoga.

Musical performances begin on the main stage at 7 PM.
Performers include popular Philadelphia musicians like
Kursten Bouton, Jesse Schurr, Bill McConney, Jim
Stevens, and more. There will also be impromptu acoustic
jams at the drum circle area for anyone who wants to pick
up a drum or guitar and play.

Admission is free with a suggested donation of $10 per adult.
The first 75 people who donate $20 or more will receive a Coupon Book worth over $500 in holistic/green products and services. There will also be a prize drawing for 3 hours of green housecleaning by KD Clean.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a ceremony today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $149,992 grant to the West Chester Area School District for a project to help local businesses conserve energy, save money and cut harmful greenhouse gases.

The District’s Student Conservation Corps, made up of high school students concerned about the environment, will encourage and teach area businesses simple, no-cost measures to achieve 10 percent reductions in their energy usage and emissions of greenhouse gases. The project is one of 20 nationwide funded by EPA to showcase how communities are fighting climate change.

“EPA is proud to support students who are taking responsibility for the future of our environment,” said Shawn M. Garvin, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator. “Their efforts to engage businesses in conserving energy will have pay offs economically and for the larger community by improved air quality.”

The district already has an energy efficiency program, started and implemented by students, in operation in its 16 school buildings. The district spends $3 million a year for electricity. Last year, B. Reed Henderson High School, where today’s ceremony was held, used $300,000 of electricity. Now, as a result of its “Power Down Fridays” program the school has reduced its energy use by 22 percent – saving the taxpayers $60,000 annually.

Dr. Jim Scanlon, the district’s Superintendent, expressed excitement about this grant and in particular the way it is structured. “Our students are a great resource for ideas and care so much about the future of our community. That’s why they’re a key part of the implementation strategy.”

As a part of this EPA-funded project, the district plans to broaden its conservation efforts district-wide to achieve an additional 10 percent cut in energy use and greenhouse gases. Preliminary calculations estimate that by 2012 about 1,960 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions will be reduced annually through efforts by the businesses and the school district.

EPA will monitor the progress of grant recipients and will post quarterly updates about each recipient online.
